There are 168 known species of ants in Alabama.  Ants
found in the Jefferson and Shelby County areas include the pavement ant, yellow crazy ant, sugar
ants, the Pharaoh ant, carpenter ants, Argentine Ants, odorous house
ants and red imported fire ants.   Because of the
adaptive nature of ant colonies, eliminating the entire colony is nearly
impossible.

Pest management is therefore a matter of controlling local
populations, instead of eliminating an entire colony.  Many enter into
homes around doors, windows, and through plumbing and electrical wires.
Most bite and sting.  They will also infest stored food and feed off of
grease and/or sugar depending on the species.  Homes in or near newly developed neighborhoods can be susceptible due to excavation and landscaping.

Ants invade homes in winter and summer.  Shelby County areas with excessive ant populations have been in Helena, Pelham, and Alabaster.  Jefferson County areas with excessive populations include Hoover near the Shades Mountain area.
